Propagation of Wave Packets
in Dispersive Media
I have published online a review of my work on wave packet refraction for gravity water waves covering more then 35 years of my research. The work is published with arXiv.org administered by Cornell University. One objective of my work is to compare backtracks to storms considering both monochromatic waves and wave packets (two refraction laws). Directional wave data measured with arrays of pressure sensors was used in these studies. My approach differs from what is normally done. In addition to the Munk et al (1963) data for the Southern and Indian Oceans I also analyzed data from storms in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Good results are obtained for wave packet backtracks. Further, I present the results of a controlled wave tank experimental test of a critical angle of propagating wave groups.
