Hawaii - The Big Island

The Hawaiian Islands were built by volcanic eruptions from the deep ocean floor. The youngest of these islands is the Big Island (Hawaii). The dormant volcano Mauna Kea on Hawaii peaks at 18,000 feet (5488 meters) above the ocean floor, and if the ocean were removed it would be the tallest mountain on the earth. You can see evidence of the earth building process by visiting the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the southeastern part of the Island. This is a fascinating place that we enjoyed a lot. There are many examples of lava flows as seen in the picture. Park rangers will tell you if there is an eruption in progress and where to go to see it. We saw hot lava that had recently flowed when we were there. In the park you can drive around the crater of an old volcano. There are many trails to walk, including one through a lava tube. Touring the rest of the Big Island you can find several black beaches. There are fields of coffee (southwest), macadamia nuts (east), and very large cattle ranches (north). The Kona area on the west coast is a favorite of visitors. There are accommodations there to satisfy a wide range of budgets.

Kauai - The Garden Island

For a different experience we also toured the island of Kauai. This is one of the most beautiful and romantic places that we have visited. It is a great place for a honeymoon, and we chose it for ours. The Waimea Canyon (west) offers spectacular views. The colors in the rocks are gorgeous, as can be seen in the picture. There are a number of impressive waterfalls such as Opaekaa Falls (east). The Fern grotto (east) is a favorite of romantics. The Kilauea Lighthouse (north) is a wonderful place to observe birds. We saw some that looked like they were flying backwards. The rugged Na Pali Coast (northwest) has trails and views that are magnificent. Whether relaxing on a beach or touring the country side, the Big Island and Kauai complement each other to make a wonderful vacation. If you have more time, you will also enjoy exploring the remaining islands.
