Cruising is a bargain

More and more people are discovering that cruising is a real bargain. The price includes nearly everything pertaining to the cruise including entertainment, food, and the famous midnight buffet. The few extras that you usually do not pay for in advance include alcoholic beverages and tips. Optional shore excursions are also extra.

Many destinations are served by a number of cruise companies offering you choices based on your budget and expectations. Cruises ships vary in size from the small ships with fewer than 100 passengers, to ships with 800 or so passengers, to the larger ships with more than 2000 passengers. Cruise durations of three, four, and seven nights are popular. There are also many cruises of ten days or more. On any cruise there are a variety of shore excursions giving you the opportunity to sample different things in each port. A wonderful thing about a cruise is that your room moves with you. So you do not have to pack and unpack as you cruise from place to place.

Cruise ships and motion sickness

Due to improved ship building techniques stabilizers are added to ships to lessen the amount of ship motion due to ocean waves. This makes it less likely that someone will get seasick. Those concerned about motion sickness are advised to choose a cabin near the center of motion of the ship as opposed to near either the stern or the bow. If you are really concerned go with one of the larger ships. Medicine to control motion sickness is available from medical doctors and druggists. However, under normal conditions most people on modern cruise ships do not have a problem with motion sickness.

When to book a cruise

When should you book a cruise? You should book early to save money. Six months in advance is not too early. If you wait until a month before the cruise the cabins will either be more expensive or most likely sold out. That can be really disappointing. Another good question is: How should you book airline tickets to the cruise ship? Cruise companies buy up lots of airline seats at good prices to offer to their cruisers as part of the package. Sometimes you can find less expensive air by booking independently from the cruise line. But a word of warning if you do: If due to reasons like bad weather or mechanical problems you arrive at the dock too late and find that the ship is already gone, then it is your responsibility to catch up with the cruise. If the cruise line booked your airline tickets then they assume responsibility for getting you to the ship. That is a comfortable feeling. Also, be sure to consider cancellation insurance so that you can get your money back if you or a close family member gets sick and you are unable to make the cruise. The insurance covers this and other things which you can learn about from your friendly travel consultant.
